Learning to Take Turns

Social skills like sharing and taking turns are basic skills children must learn as they will be interacting with peers and adults on a daily basis. Learning social skills helps children understand the importance of sharing and cooperating.

Taking turns is often first introduced to children in the context of playing games or using toys. This skill shows in everyday life: lining up in queue, waiting for their turn to speak in conversation, or using a shared resource.

By learning to take turns, children can learn to be patient and to wait for their opportunity. It also helps children to develop empathy, self-control, and to respect the rights and feelings of others.
